Abstract. The article provides an overview of researches on the in silico cell development.  In silico cell or e-cell is an informational and computational resource to simulate the full-scale metabolism of the cell taking into account the processes of genetic regulation as well as mechanisms of cell growth and division. There are also highlighted the key challenges for its development and existing approaches to its solution, including designed and developed at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics, SB RAS.

Key words: in silico cell, elementary subsystem, mathematical modeling.
